Does Your Dog Need Overnights?
A Savvy Sitter Guide to Making the Best Choice for Your Pet
When planning care for your dog while you’re away, one of the most common questions we hear is:
“Do I need overnight pet sitting?”
It’s a great question—and the answer isn’t always what you might expect. Let’s walk through a few kind, honest, and practical things to consider so you can make the best decision for your pet.
First Things First: How Does Your Dog Normally Sleep?
Most dogs… sleep. A lot.
If your dog typically:
- Sleeps through the night without needing a potty break
- Is comfortable in their home environment
- Doesn’t experience anxiety when alone overnight
Then overnight care may not actually be necessary
Many pets thrive with:
- An Evening Tuck-in Visit
- A morning Breakfast Visit
- Midday Visits
This keeps their routine consistent and stress-free.

The Reality of Overnight Care (What Most Don’t See)
We believe in transparency, because overnight care involves more than just “sleeping over.”
Labor & Time Commitment
Most overnight requests we see are for: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM (12 hours)
Or shorter windows like 10:00 PM – 6:00 AM (8 hours)
With minimum wage increasing to $15/hour, let’s break that down:
- 8-hour overnight (10 PM – 6 AM): 👉 $15 × 8 hours = $120 per night (minimum labor cost)
- 12-hour overnight (7 PM – 7 AM): 👉 $15 × 12 hours = $180 per night (minimum labor cost)
And that’s just base pay – before factoring in:
- Payroll taxes
- Insurance
- Administrative time
- Travel
- Overtime if applicable
👉 This is why professional overnight care is considered a premium service
Scheduling Limitations
For companies with employees:
- Staff are limited to 40 hours per week before overtime
- Overnight shifts count toward those hours – even while sleeping
👉 This means a sitter may only be able to: Work 2–3 overnights per week OR must reduce other daytime services
This impacts:
- Availability
- Consistency
- Scheduling flexibility
Who Is Providing the Overnight Care?
Different companies structure this differently:
Employees
Pros:
- Trained, insured, and vetted team
- Consistent standards and procedures
- Accountability and supervision
Considerations:
- Higher cost due to legal wage requirements
- Limited availability due to labor laws
Independent Contractors
Some companies use independent contractors for overnights.
Pros:
- Often more flexible availability
- Sometimes lower pricing
Considerations:
- May not be covered under the company’s full insurance
- Less control over training and consistency
- Varying experience levels
👉 Not all setups are the same—it’s always okay to ask questions so you feel confident in your pet’s care 💜
A Note on Hiring Sitters Directly (What Many Pet Parents Don’t Realize)
Before choosing overnight care—especially hiring someone independently—it’s important to understand the legal and financial responsibilities involved.
When you hire a sitter directly (outside of a licensed and insured company), the relationship may fall under what’s known as a “household employee arrangement”.
What does that mean for you as the Pet Owner?
If you set the schedule, direct how care is provided, and have the sitter working in your home, the law may consider you a “household employer“.
This can come with responsibilities such as paying at least minimum wage, potentially paying overtime, handling payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare), and providing proper tax documentation.
What about the Sitter?
The sitter is responsible for reporting income to the Internal Revenue Service—even if they are paid cash, Venmo/Zelle, or “under the table.” All income is still considered taxable.
Why this Matters (especially for Overnights)
Overnight care is where this becomes most important. A flat overnight rate (for example $75–$100), when divided over 8–12 hours, can fall below minimum wage. This may create legal risk if the sitter is considered an employee.
Real-World Consideration
Many pet parents don’t realize that hiring directly can unintentionally create employer obligations, and that casual arrangements can still be subject to labor laws and tax rules.
The Savvy Perspective
This is one of the many reasons why working with a professional, licensed, and insured pet care company provides proper worker classification, compliance with labor laws, insurance and liability protection, and consistent, trained care. It removes the guesswork—and the risk—for you as the pet owner.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about care—it’s about doing it the right way, safely and responsibly for everyone involved.
Owner vs. Team-Based Overnights

In some cases:
- The business owner may personally do overnights
- Or a small team member pool may handle them
Because of this:
- Availability is often very limited
- Services may be reserved for existing or VIP clients
At The Savvy Sitter, we prioritize pets we see regularly – 🐾 because relationships matter
We want your pet to already know, trust, and feel comfortable with their sitter.
Insurance, Safety & Responsibility
Overnight care also includes:
- Increased liability in your home
- Safety considerations for both pets and staff
- Professional insurance and bonding
This is part of what ensures peace of mind while you’re away
A Savvy Perspective: What We Recommend
In many cases, dogs are happiest with:
- Routine Visits
- Familiar Structure
- Love and Enrichment during waking hours
Instead of overnights, we often suggest longer or more frequent visits for:
✔️ Evening Tuck-in Visit
✔️ Morning Breakfast Visit
✔️ Midday care as needed
- This provides:
- Consistency
- Flexibility
- High-quality attention when pets are actually awake
So… Does Your Dog Need Overnights?
The majority of the Dogs will not need overnights, but routine care.
The best care plan is one that:
- Fits your dog’s needs
- Supports their routine
- Is sustainable for consistent, reliable care
